INSTRUCTIONS

FINAL PROJECT : 20s Animation Teaser

Proposal (Simplified version)
This final project is linked to the module Films Studies and Cinematography
Proposal (Simplified version), Week 9 (26/20/2022)

Animatics
Animatics Version 1, Week 9 (27/10/2022)
Animatics Version 2 (with sound), Week 10 (3/11/2022)

Tie-down Animation
I just realized I exceeded 20 seconds with only 2 scenes. So, I removed the initial second scene (space). However, I hope I can still animate the last part (Scene 3) after almost completing on Scene 1 and 2.

Remaining scenes:
Scene 1 - Dough and oven
Scene 2 - Cat chasing rat
Scene 3 - Walking in the forest (to be confirmed)
Scene 1 + 2, Week 14 (29/11/2022)

After getting feedback from Mr. Kamal, I made some minor changes to the timing and pacing to make the flow looks better.

Amended Scene 1 + 2, Week 14 (1/12/2022)

I made some minor adjustments to the girl's limbs. I also changed to animate in two.
Amended walk cycle (in two), Week 14 (1/12/2022)

Finally, I animated this scene although I knew the length of my final animation has already reached the minimum requirement.

Colouring
I exported all the frames in PNG sequence and coloured them one by one in Photoshop.

Figure 1.3, Colouring process, Week 15 (8/12/2022)

I have coloured a total of 785 frames for this 34-second animation.

Post-production in After Effects
Finally after days and nights, I finished colouring and compiled all the PNG sequence in After Effects. I added some camera movement in Scene 2 and Scene 3.

Here is the animation compilation without sound.

Sound Effects in Adobe Premiere Pro
After adding the opening scene (story title and author), I continued working on the sound effects in Adobe Premiere Pro. These are the 32 sound effects I have used in my animation.

FEEDBACK

Week 9 :

Scene 1 - suggest to start with the full shot of the dough. Suddenly, the monster tongue is swiping from the right screen. It eats those doughs on the right screen. Then show the dough is reacting with shocked face. The second action of the tongue comes immediately of the left eat the other 2..as the tongue is swiping, he manage to jump up and avoid from being caught. No need to show panel 2 where the monster caught all those doughs..it breaks the story pacing. Try to use camera dynamic as transition like the mouth, and the flowing element like the star, growing plants, can be used that to direct the camera movement to follow the direction.

Week 11 :

The motion is acceptable. But need to focus on the timing. The drawings can be improved (especially on the hands and legs) to show 3d. Scene 1 when the oven's tongue entering the screen, it is better to come from the right. Camera cut is fine. Move the dough to the left and focus on the right to show what is happening. It is definitely not easy to animate these but don't afraid to make mistakes because you will learn from the mistakes.

Week 12 :

Scene 3 (cat chasing scene) can pause a little bit before the cat jumps, and also give some time for the rat to look back and continue running. Scene 4 (walk cycle) looks fine.

Week 13 :
No class due to GE-15.

Week 14 :

The timing for the oven's tongue grabbing the doughs can be faster (Around 8s). When the tongue releasing the dough can also make it faster. At 0.09s you can hold a bit longer. The timing for the transition of Scene 1 and 2 can be improved. (Cut away the last scene of the tongue, or extend the tongue.) The track (can make it thinner). Try remove the cat's hand moving. Keep the flow going. The overall animation looks much better than the previous one.

REFLECTION

Finally, I managed to finish the animation by Week 15! This is the second most tedious assignment (after dissertation) which took me weeks to animate. Since this is a joined project with another module, sometimes both lecturers has different feedback and make me hesitate. After communicating with both lecturers, I came up with my own versions that I think works the best and successfully gained the approval from both lecturers. I would like to thank Mr. Martin and Mr. Kamal who give me useful advice and feedback throughout the journey. I realized I always came up with new ideas during the animating process. Initially, I thought I can animate 4 different scenes in 20 seconds (like what I showed in the animatics). At the end, I added extra scenes like fatigue (yawning), confused and shocking because Mr. Kamal would like to see more facial expressions in this final project. I ended up with a 35-second animation (785 frames + 32 sound effects + 4 sick days) across 4 softwares (Animate, Photoshop, After Effects and Premiere Pro). I think animating in Adobe Animate has its pros and cons but I really don't like its brush and eraser. If it is a vector-based animation, Animate would be a good choice to animate using pen tool and line tool. But my preference is to reserve the originality of the line strokes when drawing frame by frame, in which I have tried hard to present in my animation teaser. I like the exaggeration of expressions and actions that can be done in animation. All in all, this project is meaningful for me, and maybe my future.
