LECTURE : Introduction to FLIP
LECTURE
Week 1
This week Ms. Anis has briefed us about the FLIP Topic. Some given tasks will need us working as a group and some are individual tasks.
The topics are :
1. Types of infographic
2. Saul Wurman's L.A.T.C.H
3.
Miller's Law Memory (Chunking)
4. Manuel Lima's 9 directives
manifestos
Each FLIP deliveries will be evaluated as part of our group work assessment.
INSTRUCTIONS
FLIP TOPIC 1 : Different types of infographics & online tools
Group Task
To find out what are the different types of infographic, the kind of information they're applicable for, and provide an example for each identified type.
My group (Group 8) consists of 7 members : Veyhan, Christie, Yi Xuan, Wendy, Wiceline, Hoda and I. We have created a WhatsApp group as the platform of discussion. We recorded our presentation by using Zoom.

Individual Task
We can pick one free online infographic tool and re-design one poorly constructed infographic poster through our own experimentation with the selected tool. During the process, we are asked to record and present the redesigned infographics with before and after comparison and personal rating and review of the online tool for difficulty, intuitiveness, usefulness and design templates.
Well, I never try using any of these online tools except Canva. I quickly create a free account and try to experience them by going through the templates and features that were provided. Below are my first impression to these online tools :
Canva
- Easy to use
- Provide a wide range of features
- Need to pay to get rid of the watermark on some elements
Infogram
- Has lesser templates
- Need to pay and upgrade to use a better template
- Lesser typefaces provided
Snappa
- Lesser elements
- Mostly free templates
Visme
- Has 3D graphics
- Very similar to Canva
Piktochart
- Aimed at more professional users
- Fewer features
Personal preference :
Canva > Visme > Piktochart >
Snappa > Infogram
I went to search for bad infographic examples in Pinterest. Some common mistakes I found in the online infographics are : too much information, too little information, poor design, graphics overload and unclear flow of information.

Problems :
- Too many typefaces
- No breathing space
- The icon is
not relevant to the content
- Bad visual hierarchy
I decided to work with Canva. I reduced some of the info and inserted the icons according to the content. I kept the same colour theme, which is blue, but much lighter because I want to create more contrast between the donut wheel and the background. I also reduced the number of typefaces to two, which are Bobby Jones for the title, and Quicksand for the content.

FLIP TOPIC 2 : Saul Wurman's L.A.T.C.H
This group task is assigned to Group 1, 2, and 3. Since I am in Group 8, this week we are not required to research on this topic.
Here are the video presentations from the respective groups :
Group 1 : https://youtu.be/NPCHU0Q5POE
Group 2 : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Brq8jmvIQ2c
Group 3 : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tudMqZpIDN0
Notes
L.A.T.C.H is a method of information organisation that consist of
5 principles :
L - Location
A - Alphabet
T -
Time
C - Category
H - Hierarchy
Location : Organises the most relevant locations in a systematic
manner
Alphabet : Organises data starting from
A-Z.
Time : Organises data in a chronological order or
other sequential information
Category : Organises information
by similar importance
Hierarchy : Organises information on a
scale (e.g. largest to smallest)
FLIP TOPIC 3 : Miller's Law Memory (Chunking)
This group task is only assigned to Group 4, 5 and 6.

Notes:
Chunking is a term referring to the process of taking individual pieces of information (chunks) and grouping them into larger units. It is a concept originates from the field of cognitive psychology. By grouping each piece into a large whole, you can improve the amount of information you can remember.
Importance of Chunking
- It is easy to plan if we
want storyboard.
- Content chunking accommodates working
memory.
- Build on our learners' knowledge.
-
Everyone benefits from bullet points.
Methods of Chunking
1. Breaking the text down into
smaller parts
2. Identifying similarities
3. Grouping
the chunks
Effectiveness of Chunking
- A good and effective
strategy for teaching reading comprehension.
- Improve
students' performance and resolve the students' issues.
-
Encourage the students' motivation and involvement.
