REFLECTION
Experience
The overall experience wasn't too bad. There were a lot of things to handle at once due to the pack schedule. I think the project I struggled the most is Task 2. There was a point I almost gave up because I had no idea how can I improve my work. I seek help from my peers and evaluate their feedback, from that I was abled to see my room of improvement and gained motivation to continue improving the work. Finally the outcome is much better after I kept trying to produce up to 16 variations.
I think the interaction among classmates is pretty important for this module although there is no group work. It was difficult to familiar with lecturers' teaching style and I believed most of the students were lost in the beginning. There were too much information given at once (in the first class), that makes me felt less exciting, more stressful. Telegram group played an important role at that moment. We were helping each other and my anxiety level dropped because I realised I was not alone. At the end, I am happy to met some new friends and we improve together.
Observation
My observation skills have improved a lot throughout this module. I have learnt to observe the nuance details of letterforms like illusions so that they can be visually balance. Conducting research and analysis of the shapes of letterforms have definitely helped me to see those details. Now I can relate to this statement "slight adjustment can make a great impact on a design. "
I am also inspired by seniors' work and my peers' work. In the first class, our lecturers had provided us some seniors' blog link so that we can refer to it. During the class, we were given chances to review and give feedback to each others' work. It was a great opportunity for me to observe others' work and get inspirations.
Just like what Mr. Vinod said in the beginning of the class, I started to observe typography surrounded me, such as products at home, banners and billboards. I do get a little triggered if I saw a "bad" kerning.
Findings
Since we are required to do further reading, I learnt a lot of extra knowledge that was yet to be covered in our lecture videos. It is interesting to learn about the history and theory of typography, which is what I never expect from a typography class. There were some rules that we should follow so that our design can be aesthetically even and well-arranged.
Throughout the journey, I learnt to appreciate every good type design and the hard work of typographers. I also learnt about the various aspects need to be take note when designing a typeface, including readability, consistency and alignment.
