LECTURE

We didn't have class on Week 8 as it was independent learning week. This week we looked into realism and surrealism.

Realism

Takes subject matters of the ordinary and common world which we call "reality." It almost always takes a non-exotic and non-extraordinary subject matter and theme. There is no need to think outside of the box, as that is not "real."

Surrealism

A twist on Realism. It explores the subconscious mind, with subject matters concentrating on dream-images and often aims to distort the ordinary and what we call reality.

Surrealism is a cultural movement focused on type of arts to express about the artist’s idea themselves.

In this digital era surrealism is one of the top digital art styles.

How to start creating surrealism artworks?

- Dream-like scenes and symbolic images
- Unexpected, illogical juxtapositions
- Bizarre assemblages of ordinary objects
- Primitive or child-like designs

1. Sketch It Out
Take a piece of paper and pen/pencil or a tablet and start to sketch. Draw your vision out roughly. Don't finesse any details yet, but just lay out key points of your vision.

2. Find Reference Images
Gathering reference images will help you greatly in realizing your new idea. Gather images that directly relate to what you have in mind.

Ask yourself...

1. "Does this look real?"
Surrealism is at its best when it's convincing enough that it could be real, however we obviously know that the subject matter you are creating is nonexistent, thus is not real.

2. Make it happen to the best of your ability.
When you try to approach something challenging, you will learn the skills you may need for next time to make it work. The worst thing you can do is be afraid and back off from your idea, because you would never learn that way.

TUTORIAL

This week we were given a video tutorial on how to create loop animation for Instagram story.

PRACTICAL

Process of Project 2B

Continuation of Part 3 : Poster Development

Adjustments were made after I received feedback from Mr. Fauzi.

I retook the image because I was not satisfied with the previous image. Some of the flowers are wilting, so they did not look fresh in the photograph. I also made some colour adjustments to the original image. Then, I moved the texts (details and call for action) to the centre, and thicken the texts to increase its readability. Finally, I did some final touchups by adding a little smiling face at the wrist.

The year of 2020 has been one of the most challenging and toughest years of our lifetimes. People are suffering, feeling helpless, lonely, panic and worried about health, jobs, money and social relations, which eventually leads to the increasing rate of mental illness. We understand that there is no easy fix for recovering from mental illness. We need time and patience to adapt to this new normal, finding our energy source and motivation to face those life challenges. It might sound difficult on how to stay positive throughout the pandemic, but this is not impossible. Bearing this in mind, we are all in this together. Hence, be positive and spread your positivity today!

FEEDBACK

Mr. Fauzi said the new picture I took for the poster design is a better version. Good effort and keep up the good work!
