INSTRUCTIONS

FINAL PROJECT : Organic Modeling (Character)

In this project, we are tasked to produce an organic model from a model sheet. The character I have chosen is Kiki from an animation from Studio Ghibli, Kiki's Delivery Service. I am keen to take this challenge to model a human character.

References
I have downloaded some references from the Internet.

Modeling
I watched some tutorials from YouTube to learn how to sculpt a human head. This is the second time I model a human face (the first time is during foundation year using Sculptris). I found it challenging to make the face looks "chibi". It took me quite awhile to make the facial features do not look off.

Then, I extended the neck to form shoulders. Most of the time I only used Grab tool and Smooth tool.

I looked for a reference of a female human body while modeling the torso.

The next step is to model the character's hand. This is one of the most challenging process for me. I kept adjusting the angle of each fingers, knuckles, wrist... It just took longer time than I expected. Each finger took me around 1 hour to shape. I also used Remesh quite frequently to switch from low poly to high poly while modeling this part.

For the eyes, I added two spheres and filled in the eye sockets.

Mr. Kamal has demonstrated a way to model the hair using Bezier. When I tried out this method, I found it a bit time-consuming to adjust the handles. So, I watched some tutorials from YouTube and found a better way to sculpt the hair. I created a circle and a path, then linked the path to the circle. I can then model the shape of the circle to get a unique surface of the hair stroke.

Lighting
After colouring, I used three-point lighting to set up the scene and prepared for rendering.

Rendering
Finally, I rendered the final output in Eevee and Cycles (for final submission).

Sketchfab
Although we are not required to upload our model onto Sketchfab, I just wanted to give it a try and see how it will look like in this software. I did not make any changes in Sketchfab so the lighting and shadow will look a bit off.

REFLECTION
In the beginning of the project, I was hesitating on which character to choose because I want to model something challenging. At the end, I decided to model a human character. I know it would be a tough process to sculpt the human anatomy especially the facial features and hands. But thanks to the YouTube tutorials, my saviour, where I get to learn to model the face in Sculpting mode and the path tool to shape the hair. The most satisfying process is to see the hair being "planted" on the character's head. Considering the limited time given, I am glad to see the final output. I hope I can continue to polish up my modeling skills in the future.
