Project 1/ Hard Surface Modeling
INSTRUCTIONS
PROJECT 1 : Hard Surface Modeling
Hard surface modeling is a technique used for creating 3D models with
smooth and solid surfaces.
We are tasked to choose hard surface object in any of these categories:
a. Vehicle
b. Weapon
c. Robot
d. Machine
We should model the selected object using polygon tools and techniques based
on what you have learnt, and apply the right material and texture to give
its appearance. We should set lighting and rendering using ‘Eevee’ as the
rendering engine. Finally, use Eevee rendering (Blender) for final output.
Output size is 1280 x 720 with png format.
Inspiration
I am keen to model a robot. I went to Pinterest and
found some references of robots.

Sketch
I decided to make a round-shaped robot with sharp-edged blade on the top
and box-shaped limbs. Figure 1.2 is my rough sketch of the robot, "Scravum".

Modeling
I started off with a cube to model the robot's limbs. I mostly used inset
and bevel tool to mold the outlook. Extrude tool is applied to form the
switch buttons on two sides of the limbs.

Another limb is made by duplicating the original one and mirrored to
X-axis. Then, I added a sphere and applied inset to create the layering. I
used another sphere to form the robot's eye. For the robot's shell, I
selected the faces and separated the selection. After that, I applied
extrude to those faces to create thickness.

I used a square plane to model the blades. Scaling is applied to create
sharp tip at the end of the blade. Besides, I also added twist from simple
deform and applied solidify modifier to add thickness.

For the connection between the limbs and the body, I decided to use curve
to create the curviness of the tube. I first added a cylinder, and applied
array so that the shape is non-destructive. Then, I created a bezier curve
and edited the angle of the points. The next step is to apply curve modifier
on the cylinder so it will follow the shape of the curve.

Second Attempt (Colors and light)
I have applied colors on my robots after receiving feedback. I also made some adjustments on the hardshell of the robot.

Then, I also applied a light beam emitted from its eye. To make it emits a blue light, I changed the color of emission in material setting and checked "bloom" in the render setting.

Next, I adjusted the power of light and unchecked the scene world. |

The color is too bright, does not suite the robot. Take note on the overlapping parts on the hands.
REFLECTION
I enjoy this project because I get to model what I am interest to do. I am
eager to learn and master more skills so that I can take the challenge to
create a more complex object.
