INSTRUCTION

EXERCISE 1 : Sound Dubbing

We were asked to record the voiceover and add sound effects to a given clip (a short clip taken from Disney Soul).

I use Voice Memos to record my voice, and import to Adobe Audition to tweak my voice from female to male.

After I adjusted the audio pitch, I use Premiere Pro to sync the audio and video.

EXERCISE 2 : Sound Shaping

We were tasked to shape the given soundtrack according to five scenarios (phone call, underground cave, inside the closet, in the toilet, in a stadium) using Adobe Audition.

Phone call
Added supermarket speaker sound effect, lowered bass, treble and raised mid range using Parametric Equalizer.

Inside the closet
Lowered bass, treble and raised mid range using Parametric Equalizer.

Toilet
Used Studio Reverb to adjust dry and wet.

Underground Cave
Used full reverb to adjust room size, dimension, pre-delay time and lowered bass, treble and raised mid range using Parametric Equalizer.

Stadium
Used studio reverb to adjust dry and wet, room size, and added echo.

EXERCISE 3 : Sound Design

In this exercise, we are tasked to use the audio clips provided and edited them based on the following:
a) Explosion magnification
b) Variation of punch sounds (triple punch)
c) Monster of alien voice (select one part from sample voice)

Audio file link :

Explosion magnification
I designed the explosion sound effect by tweaking its stretch and pitch and then applied the layering technique to magnify the sound.

Punch
The original audio clip is a cartoon punch effect. Since we were asked to turn it into triple punch with variation, I adjusted the stretch and pitch, and also added fade in and fade out effects on each clips.

Monster or alien voice

To create a alien voice, I changed the setting in stretch and pitch to increase the speed and pitch. I also added Flanger effect and played with the modulation rate. Last but not least, reverse effect was applied so that people could not understand what is it talking (haha).

FEEDBACK

Week 7 :

The final audio dubbing is good. Just add one more leaf falling effect and you are good for submission.

REFLECTION
In sound dubbing exercise, I learned to record a voiceover and adjusted the pitch so that my sound would fit to the character. I also added a few sound effects like leaves falling and vehicles sound to fit the scenario. It was a fun process. In sound shaping exercise, I realised sounds can be shaped based on different environment. I have learned some techniques in sound shaping exercise. Last but not least, the four sound design techniques, time stretching/compression, pitch shifting, reversing and layering are important in filmmaking because it will make the film feel more real.
