INSTRUCTIONS

Here it comes to the final task --- execution of final idea. We are going to utilise the data collected from the previous task and produce a visual design that reflect our interpretation and definition of "purpose" that has considered cultural and aesthetic aspects.

There is no restriction on the proposed medium. If the outcome is a physical artwork, we are to submit the artwork in campus.

Execution of final idea

Our final idea is to create three actual weapons (Keris, Jambiya, and Saintie) and "dragify" them using paint, gems, pearls and clothes.

3D Modelling and Printing

To bring our idea to life, seems like 3D modelling is the best option we can go for. Jia Sheng is the one who is in charge of this entire stage. He then went to print them out using Taylor's 3D printing service, and primed the models.

Painting

16/2 - Base colour paint
I was looking forward to our very first face-to-face meeting on campus, but unfortunately, due to the unforeseen circumstances, I was informed as a *super* close-contact with someone positive few days before our first meet-up. Since I am yet to take my booster shot, I have to practice self-quarantine for 7 days, and 16th of February is the 5th day of my quarantine. Jia Sheng did not join them because he was dying from his booster shot. Ah, tough times during the pandemic (T-T).

The only thing I could help is to find reference pictures and did some sketches (mostly referred to our proposal's sketches).

19/2 - Detailing
I was free from quarantine and could finally join the second meet-up. I was tasked to draw the patterns on the other side of Jambiya.

*To provide some context to Figure 2.5, someone broke the Saintie 2 times within 5 minutes and hot glue has become our saviour.

Decoration

After the meet up, Tress brought the weapons back home to varnish and decorate them. This is an important stage to further "dragify" the weapons.

FEEDBACK

Week 7

General feedback
Strong narrative and rationale are just as important for your outcome. The description/rationale/background story add value to the art.

Specific feedback
Make sure the outfits don't obscure too much of the weapon details.

Week 8

Specific feedback

  • Typesetting - please use left align or allow hyphenation (avoid rivers at all cost).
  • Islam: I would advise you against bringing it up, why? Because you are not scholars and most of you don’t live the religion — thus it may seem a bit to strong to accuse an entire religion. This is my view, if you disagree you may continue as is. I would suggest under the slide title “Why?” To just state that that "the countries mentioned are all countries that prescribe the death penalty for homosexuality" that’s should suffice, no need to go into practices of islam, the hadith etc else it might seem more like Islamaphobia. In replacement you could state instances of such deaths being meted out (or something else). You can also mention in cursory that, they are other countries that are very hostile to homosexuals like Uganda (and more) which prescribes life in prison but since it does not involve a death penalty it was not included…
  • Change in content slide, change “working title” to title.
  • Research Objective: “& spread drag culture” hmmm… maybe substitute the word “spread” to acceptance might require a rewording.
  • We should reword the "Dragification" part to sound more powerful. Tie in how death penalty = weapon (object that brings death) = toxic masculinity. Then state how you intend to turn this on its head (so to speak) with dragification.
  • Well done kids.

REFLECTION

Due to the short semester, the timeline is usually very tight. Of course, effective time management is one of the most important aspects to keep everything on track. Other than this, I have learnt more about drag culture and it has changed my perspective on them. We are searching for purposes of drag all the way, and at the end we realised that each drag queen has their own definition of the purpose of doing drag. But one thing we can confirm is that, drag can be purposed to protest. We want to stop the stereotypical thinking of “how they should look like”, and stop the penalty for homosexuality.

After taking this module, I become more aware about the minority rights and culture. Minority group, a culturally, ethnically or racially distinct group that coexists with but is subordinate to a more dominant group. The importance of intercultural study is to understand how the different cultures came about. We learnt about why a group of people behave in a certain way, and what impact can our actions make to them.

Working as a group encourages us to develop and explore new perspectives on a subject matter. It allows us to try different techniques of problem solving. For example, I never think of 3D modelling and printing would be an option to convert our idea to a physical model. It is something I’m not familiar with. After viewing the process jotted down by Jia Sheng in his blog, I found it interesting to learn about.

I think the module can be improved by featuring a group to share their findings, or sharing some good examples from past seniors’ work during lecture session. Not only we can get exposed to more cultures, but also get inspiration and widen our vision on a certain aspect.

The most exciting part of this project is when we see our ideas convert into reality. We are proud of the outcome, and seems like our lecturer was impressed as well. I would like to thank for the efforts and hard work from all members and also Mr. Vinod who gave us a lot of feedback and sharing in the class.
