Week 11

LECTURE
This week is a recorded lecture. We learned some basic camera settings.

Exposure Setting
In photography, exposure is the amount of light which reaches your camera sensor or film.

Figure 1.1, Exposure, Week 11 (1/11/2021)

The main parts of the camera :
1. Camera body
- Shutter
- Image sensor
- LCD screen
2. Camera lens
- Aperture / Iris

Figure 1.2, Parts of camera, Week 11 (1/11/2021)

Figure 1.3, Light path, Week 11 (1/11/2021)

The camera body is a light proof box.

There are only two camera settings that affect the actual “luminous exposure” of an image: shutter speed and aperture. The third setting, camera ISO, also affects the brightness of your photos.
Figure 1.4, Aperture, shutter and ISO, Week 11 (1/11/2021)

IRIS
Iris/aperture is control the flow of light entering the lens.
Figure 1.5, Iris, Week 11 (1/11/2021)

Figure 1.6, Relationship of iris and brightness of image, Week 11 (1/11/2021)
The lower the f-number, the larger the lens opening.

SHUTTER
The shutter is a small plastic sheet that opens and closes to allow light onto the film or prevent light from reaching the film.

Figure 1.7, Anatomy of camera, Week 11 (1/11/2021)

SHUTTER SPEED
Shutter speed is measured in seconds: 1/1000 s,1/500 s,1/250 s,1/125 s,1/60 s,1/30 s,1/15 s,1/8 s,1/4 s,1/2 s,1 s, 2 s, 3 s…

Figure 1.8, Effect of shutter speed on motion blurred, Week 11 (1/11/2021)

ISO
Originally referred to the sensitivity of film—it's "light gathering" ability. For digital photography, ISO refers to the sensitivity—the signal gain—of the camera's sensor.

Figure 1.9, ISO, Week 11 (1/11/2021)

The common ISO camera settings are: 100, 200, 400, 640, 800, 1600, 3200, 6400….
The lower the number of ISO the less sensitive your camera is to light and the finer the grain.

Lens Perspective

There are wide angle lens, standard lens and tele lens. Appropriate lens provided desire framing, lens choice affects angle of view. Different lenses are designed for different for different purposes. Lenses can be categorized by focal length.
Figure 2.2, Type of lens, Week 11 (1/11/2021)

Figure 2.3, Type of lens, Week 11 (1/11/2021)

The shorter the focal length, the wider the angle of view and vice-versa. It is the measurement (in millimeters) from the optical center of a camera lens to the camera’s sensor.
Figure 2.4, Focal length, Week 11 (1/11/2021)

Depth of Field
The proportion of the image that is reasonably sharp and in focus. The smaller the aperture you use, the greater the depth of field.

Figure 2.5, Shallow depth of field, Week 11 (1/11/2021)

Figure 2.6, Depth of Field, Week 11 (1/11/2021)

Figure 2.7, Lens aperture chart, Week 11 (1/11/2021)

Wide angle lenses are ideal for fitting a large area into your frame. Wide angle lens is especially useful for landscape photography or street photography. With wide angle lenses, almost everything is in focus, unless your subject is very close to the lens.

Standard lens offer a fairly accurate representation of what the human eye sees, both in terms of visual angle and perspective. Images created by standard lens are perceived as more natural than those taken with other types of camera lenses.

Tele lenses are great for isolating a subject that is far away. It allows you to photograph subjects from a distance thanks to their magnification.

DSLR V.S. SMARTPHONE
DSLR cameras are designed to capture images. Phones are designed to carry out a multitude of functions. Phone cameras are very limited by size. The size of the lens and the size of the sensor that captures the photos. Entry-level DSLR have much larger lenses and sensors than mobile phones do.

TUTORIAL
This week we have some photography lighting practice in studio. We are given opportunity to try side lighting and Rembrandt lighting.

PRACTICAL

Process of Final Project

Self-titled is an exploration project for the students to express their own individuality and reflect their personality into digital art self-expression. The main idea is to build up self-confidence and discover their interest.

This week, we are starting to develop ideas. We need to write a biography about ourselves, statements about our work and find inspirations on Internet.

Part 1 : Idea Development

Biography

Tell us about yourself.
I am Yi Yun, a 19-year-old girl. Was born in Penang but live in Johor. I am currently studying Creative Media in Taylor's University. Sometimes I am a perfectionist who is not satisfied on everything, but sometimes I am not. Basically I am just being contradictory.

*But I encounter this article saying that having a paradox mindset is good.

What is your passion?
I like art. I mean, any form of arts : painting, music, craft...I want to learn them all. I love ink sketching and acrylic painting the most. Whenever I go to an art and craft store, I would try to buy "something" because I love to keep art materials (but sometimes forget to use them).

What motivates you to achieve your dream?
I believe art has the power to change the world. I have a dream since young, which is to create a lasting impact in the art industry. Although I am not confident with my skills, hopefully one day I can achieve my goal, that is what my younger self wanted to see.

How do you want to visualise your dream into an artwork?
I would like to capture the moment I am creating art. I plan to include some illustrations floating around me or coming out from my drawing tablet, as drawing is the best way to express myself.

Statement

Tell us about your work.
It will be showing how I immersed myself in my imaginary world. The overall mood is relaxing and cheerful because I enjoy the process of drawing.

What is the concept behind it?
Since art has always been associated as power, I have the idea of utilise this power to change the current world. The pen I am holding is my time-travel tool.

What is the message you want people to understand it?
Art has to power to change the world. It presents the world in a way that changes the perspectives and values of the viewers toward the reality. It makes people feel the world. So, grab your pen, to awake your senses and spark your creativity.

What is your motto/quote?
"We only live once. Live your life with full bloom."

Mood Board
I looked for posters that are aided with some illustrations, as seen in Figure 3.1. Figure 3.2 shows some surreal pictures that I like.

Part 2 : Design Direction

I sketched my mockup poster digitally. The first sketch will be my front view while the second sketch will be my back view. Both have similar concept, which is to capture the moment I am drawing.

FEEDBACK

Week 12 :

Mr. Fauzi said the first sketch is good. He asked me to make use of my drawing skills by adding some doodles at the back. The person in the centre (me) can be replaced by real photography. He allowed me to emphasize on my illustrations. He said I have good progress since it is nearly 50% done.
