LECTURE

Colour Theory

Colour theory is both the science and art of using colour. It explains how humans perceive colour and the messages colours communicate artistically and emotionally.

RGB : Additive colour mixing model

RGB colour is used to display on screen.

CMYK : Subtractive colour mixing model

The CMYK colour system is the colour system used for printing.

Hue, shade, tint and tone

Hue - the most basic colour terms (means colour)
Shade - black has added to a hue (red + black = burgundy)
Tint - white has added to a hue (red + white = pink)
Tone - black and white (grey) have been added to a hue

Colour Harmony

The arrangement of the colours in design in the most attractive and effective way for users' perception.

a) Monochromatic
Hard to make a mistake, distasteful colour scheme

Figure 1.5, Monochromatic

b) Analogous
3 colours located right next to each other on the colour wheel. Usually one of the three colour predominates.

Figure 1.6, Analogous

c) Complementary
Colours opposite on the colour wheel. This scheme is opposite to analogous and monochromatic since it aims to produce high contrast. It makes imagery pop, but overusing them can get tiresome.

Figure 1.7, Complementary

d) Split-complementary
Involves the use of 3 colours. Start with one coour, find its complement and use the 2 colours on either side of it.

Figure 1.8, Split-complementary

e) Triadic
3 colours evenly spaced around the colour wheel and tend to be very bright and dynamic. Using triadic colour scheme creates visual contrast and harmony simultaneously.

The Psychology of colour

Colours have an extraordinary ability to provoke specific emotions for each individual and to attract people's attention and harmony simultaneously.

Figure 2.1, Wheel of emotion

Figure 2.2, Colour emotion

Warm colours
- Evoke feelings of happiness, optimism and energy
- Attention grabbing effect
- Signal danger, make you take action

Cool colours
- Calming and soothing
- Express sadness
- Spark creativity (purple)

Black
- Used sparingly (e.g. for text)
- Works well as primary colour (background)
- Adds sophisticated and elegance, mystery

White
- Gives off an impression of clean, virtuous, healthy
- Pairs well with anything, ideal as secondary colour

TUTORIAL

We were given a video tutorial on the recolouring exercise Part 2. The video below is provided by Mr. Martin.

PRACTICAL

Process of Project 2A/Exercise 2 Part 2

For this exercise, we need to recolour 2 black and white photos (advanced level). This time we need to extract colours from the second and third picture (refer to Figure 2.1).

Second part of this exercise :
We have to pick one image and apply the same techniques.

Figure 2.6, Provided black and white photos, Week 6 (6/10/2021)

I picked this photo because I think the smoke effect would be fun to work with.

I made some hue/saturation adjustments to make it looks as realistic as possible.

Process of Project 2B

Part 3 : Develop The Design Projects

- Draft the digital poster based on your sketch
- Develop the composition techniques using Digital Photography & Graphic Design.
- Apply color, typography, textures & effects
- Finalize your design with color correction

Figure 4.1 and 4.2 show the digital sketches I develop from the previous stage. For the first idea I used peach colours to create a harmony atmosphere. For the second idea I planned to use blue sky as the background.

Figure 4.1, Digital sketch 1, Week 7 (8/9/2021)

Figure 4.2, Digital sketch 2, Week 7 (8/9/2021)

I took a bunch of photos of hand holding the flowers. Flowers indicate "positive" in this case, and includes the hand shows the action of "spreading".

Figure 4.3, Original photos, Week 7 (8/9/2021)

Figure 4.4, Original photos, Week 7 (8/9/2021)

Then, I cropped and colour adjusted on the pictures I picked to further develop into the poster design. In figure 4.5, I used the image of me holding the flower. The subject is placed at the left, and the information (title, slogan, details and call for action) is placed at the right. In figure 4.6, the image I chose is holding some yellowish flowers using two hands, with the palms facing upwards. I used blue sky as the background because I was trying to create a harmonious feel. But I was not happy with the results, so I changed the design style. In figure 4.7, I used the same hand image but replaced the background. I add dotted lines around my hands and some flower illustrations around it. I also used hand-written titles because I think this fits the style I was looking for.

FEEDBACK

Good progress. Mr. Fauzi said my attempt #3 is the best version. He suggested me to move down the slogan and make it more visible. For the call for action and details, I can put them in the centre as every information is already centralised. I can maintain the photography and the illustration.
