Week 5
LECTURE
This week we were briefed about our Project 2, poster design
development.
Conceptual Poster Design
Poster is a conventional medium to convey information to the target
audience. The power of poster in generating awareness on an issue or
conveying a brand message and luring the audience into buying products or
services is immense.
Answer these questions before you start brainstorming ideas :
- Is it a poster for brand awareness?
- Is it an advertising poster?
- Is it an Public Service Announcement poster?
Public Service Announcement (PSA)
A message in the public interest disseminated without charge, with the
objective of raising awareness of, and changing public attitudes and
behavior towards, a social issue.
As PSA is the type of poster we are going for, we can now start to :
1. Research topic
- Study and gather information
- Write summary
- Highlight key points
- Define title, slogan, details and call for action
2. Define concept
- Create a section for each contents (title, slogan, details, call for
action)
- Sketch mock up poster
- Fill in with details
3. Start developing design projects
- Draft the digital poster
- Develop the composition techniques using digital photography and graphic
design
- Apply colour, typography, textures and effects
- Finalise design with colour correction
Creative poster is made up
of four key features : title, graphic, text and white space. Layout, flow
and colour affect the order and style of these four key features.
Title - Descriptive
indicator of the contents of poster, should not exceed 2 lines of
text.
Text - Should clearly
describe the message clearly but not overloaded.
Graphic (photo) - Must
appear in context with the main text. Choose high-resolution images
White space - Create
"breathing room" within poster, help viewers avoid feeling overwhelmed by
the information being presented.
Layout - Graphics-centered
layout is suggested.
Flow - Flow coordinates
with how readers' eyes move around the different sections of poster.
Maintain hierarchy while displaying your message.
Colour - Draws reader's
gaze and define the different sections of your poster.
Ask questions to make sure your design create an impact :
- What is the purpose of my poster design?
- Am I clearly depicting the idea of my poster design?
- Does my poster convey its message meaningfully and beautifully?
TUTORIAL
We are to begin our digital imaging, Project 2A Exercise 1. There was a
video tutorial provided about how to complete this exercise. Some techniques
were taught, includes quick selection tool, layer mask, filters and colour
correction. Basically, we need to trace out Shazam and place him in Hearst
Mansion, and try to make it looks as real as possible. Then, repeat the same
steps but this time, using our own image instead. My editing process is
shown below (Practical section).
PRACTICAL
Process of Project 2A / Exercise 1
Firstly, I used quick selection tool to subtract the Shazam from
background.

The next step is to bring the cut-out into the new background, Hearst Mansion.

Then, resize the Shazam. I followed the tutorial by adjusting colour
correction, creating shadow, applying gaussian blur on the shadow, adding
his reflection and adding ripple filter to the reflection.
Now, we had to replaced Shazam's with our own image. I took a picture of
myself outside of my house (since we need a full body pic) during the
afternoon. Then, the same steps were repeated. I organised the layers and
renamed them accordingly.

Process of Project 2B
In this project, we are required to use the skillsets obtained to develop a
poster with a given theme. The theme I received is "Mental Health", with the
tagline "Stay positive during this pandemic".
Part 1 : Research about the topic
Firstly, I have to study and gather all related information about this
topic. It is a bit tricky at first because sir did not recommend the posters
that are too dark/depressed. But most of the examples I found online they
share a common feature, which is to use dark theme and used the lighting to
capture the dark side of human (portrait or silhouette). I filtered out most
of the negative vibes posters and chose these 3 as my first mood
board.

My first mood board is more to the concept of humanity. I then further
explore for more inspirations on the topic of pandemic and compiled them
in my second mood board.

My third mood board is more to spreading positivity. All these 3 pictures are good because they have positive vibes and highlight the idea of "care for your mental health".

Summary
The year of 2020 has been one of the most challenging and toughest year of
our lifetimes —— a nightmare which is yet to over. The Coronavirus disease
(COVID-19) outbreak not only has cause severe impact on our
physical health, but also our mental health.
According to the latest National Health and Morbidity Survey,
every three in 10 adults aged 16 years and above in Malaysia suffer
from mental health issues. Nowadays, mental illness has become a common disease that will
affect our thinking, emotion, behaviour and also cause functional
impairment.
Isolation, quarantine, social distancing, economic uncertainty…the daily
onslaught of bad news due to the pandemic are distracting our attention
from the normal track. As human beings are social creatures,
we often feel helpless, lonely, panic and worried about our health,
jobs, money and social relations
when we are being cut off from the social interaction.
The elevated rates of stress and anxiety can trigger depression
and lead to loss of appetites, fatigue, insomnia or
even serious condition like hallucination and thoughts of
suicide.
Staying alive in these difficult days is not easy, so why we are here to
talk about staying positive instead? Positive thinking is the key point to
effective stress management and approach unpleasantness in a more
positive and productive way. When you feel depressed, you should
break the negative cycle by focusing on something meaningful.
Instead of forcing yourself to be happy, find something to do that will
boost your mood. Exercise is one of the best ways to de-stress.
Make a habit of keeping a journal because writing can be a great
outlet for emotions. Last but not least, seek for support if you
really need a consultation.
There is no easy fix for recovering from mental illness. We
need time and patience to adapt to this new normal,
finding our energy source and motivation to face those life
challenges. It might sound difficult on how to stay positive throughout a
bad situation like this, but this is not impossible. Bearing this in mind,
we are all in this together.

FEEDBACK
Everyone did well in this Project 2A/Exercise 1. For Project 2B, Mr.
Fauzi suggested me to change my title to "Be positive and spread your
positivity today". Slogan could be "Together we can get through this
pandemic". I need to add one more sentence for my call for
action.
