Week 3
LECTURE
In this live class, we learnt about some basic tools in Photoshop : Lasso
Tool, Pen Tool and Layering.
Introduction to Photoshop
Lasso Tool
Function : To draw and pinpoint specific areas of a document.
There are 3 types of Lasso Tool :
It is great to use with a graphic tablet because it is similar to a
pencil. We were given this video tutorial on how to use the lasso
tool.
How to use the Lasso Tool
Pen Tool
Function : To create path from scratch by adding and dragging the
points.
How to trace a shape using Pen Tool
Composition tutorial provided by Mr. Fauzi
Lasso Tool vs Pen Tool
Pen Tool is versatile tool that can be used to create extremely precise
shapes and paths, using manually placed anchor points. Although commonly
used to make selections, the Pen Tool was not natively made as a selection
tool.
Layering
Layers are different images stacked on top of each other. You can use
each layer without affecting another one to make adjustments. Together
they form one final image.
The advantage of using layers is that you can save a Photoshop file with
all the layers included. This means you can use layers for non-destructive
editing. Your adjustments in Photoshop will never destroy the original
image. The layers contain all the extra information and images you want to
add to the original file.
How to Open Images as Layers in Photoshop
TUTORIAL
In this week. we started to use Photoshop to create digital collage. We
watched the video tutorial shared by Mr. Fauzi. Then, Mr. Fauzi
demonstrated us how to apply the techniques taught during the lecture.
Throughout the demonstration, our questions were answered patiently by Mr.
Fauzi.

PRACTICAL
We were given specific images to use in our digital collage. Similar to
the previous collage exercise, we had to create 3 different composition
from the images we have downloaded. We were required to use Adobe
Photoshop to complete this task.
Composition #1
It was pretty fun to play with the composition of random images. I tried
to apply the golden ration in my first composition. It shows a boy running
on the building looking for something, maybe his football gang, his
favourite pet fighting fish or his innocent childhood.
Composition #2
I made the fighting fish as the focal point in my second composition.
The rule of thirds is also being applied here.
Composition #3
This time I wanted to play with dislocation. I cropped the fish into 3
sections to create that refraction effect. I also added wave texture to
give a sense of flow.
FEEDBACK
Mr. Fauzi said my second composition is the best out of these 3
compositions.
